Ellen shares refugee’s heartwrenching letter, but woman bursts into tears when she’s called onstage.

Ekhlas Amed fled war-torn Sudan ten years ago with her family. The transition to a new life in America was hard. After getting off the wrong bus stop on her first day of school and wandering lost for 8 hours, the refugee knew she had to learn English quickly.

But Ekhlas took to her task with determination. Like many refugees and immigrants, watching television helped. Ekhlas became a fan of Ellen DeGeneres’s talk show, finding escape from the stress of readjustment in Ellen’s positivity. She even wrote Ellen a fan letter and watched the show as part of the studio audience.

Ekhlas was surprised, then, when Ellen decided to read her letter onstage…and then later called her to the stage to speak on her experiences further. Listen to Ekhlas’s story, and see what Ellen does for her after…
