A little boy finds a toy wagon in grandpa’s garage. When he goes for a ride, it’s simply magical.

Filmmaker Brandon Oldenburg tells the story of Tony, a lonely little boy who gets dropped off at grandpa’s place. Dad is over-worked and over-scheduled and doesn’t have time to spend with him.

Tony is disappointed and complains to Dad that Grandpa only does grown-up things. True to form, Grandpa leaves Tony in the garage as he goes to mow the lawn.

When Tony looks up and sees a box of old photographs on a shelf, he piles together items in the garage to climbs to reach it. But everything comes crashing down.

Grandpa hears and runs over to sees the mess. He notices Tony holding the photograph of Dad as a child and tells he tells him he’ll take him in the red wagon for a spin.

As they wander the neighborhood, Grandpa and Tony’s imagination comes alive. Suddenly, an ordinary afternoon turns into an epic adventure, narrowly escaping wild monkeys and battling aliens to save the universe.

Time flies. And Dad soon returns to see them all filthy from the fun. He’s frustrated, but then sees his old red wagon and remembers his childhood.

Through it all, Tony learns to have fun, Dad learns to be a parent and Grandpa reminds us what being a kid is all about.

“Taking Flight” is a short film inspired by the life and heritage of Antonio Pasin, inventor of the Radio Flyer wagon.
