Billy Joel wears yellow Star of David at New York show amid rising neo-Nazi activity.

Singer-songwriter and pop music legend Billy Joel is beloved for songs that combine emotional storytelling detail with unforgettable melodies. Rarely has he spoken out about politics, preferring to focus on entertaining others.

But the 68-year-old recently made a huge statement without saying a word at a concert in New York, donning a yellow Star of David when he played at Madison Square Garden.

The yellow patch, of course, is reminiscent of the ones that Jews in Nazi-occupied Europe were forced to wear in the years leading up to World War II, identifiying them as Jews. Singling them out was just one of the early steps that eventually led to the mass murder of six mission Jewish people in Nazi concentration camps — many of whom wore those stars to their deaths.

Billy isn’t typically known for political soapboxes, but may have changed his mind with the recent demonstrations by neo-Nazis in the news.

And on the day of the Solar Eclipse a yellow star appeared on the jacket of another kind of star with a clinched fist that seemed to be gripping painful, no excruciating, memories of loved ones who wore that star to their death. May that star also remind you today of the gold stars pinned to the jackets of soldiers for their bravery and valor for fighting an evil so hideous even the gold stars in the sky were afraid to shine. Thank you Billy for reminding people what was …so it may never ever again be. My darling @alexarayjoel another reason to be proud of your Pop. Billy said little else about politics on the stage. But with one simple gesture, he said a lot — and reminded many of a dark time in history that has painful echoes for many in the present.
