He snaps photo of ‘skin and bones’ homeless man, then person he least expected sees it online.

Many people have reasons for ignoring panhandlers and homeless people when they pass them on the streets. Some believe they’re scam artists. Others feel uncomfortable levels of distress when faced with a person experiencing poverty.

But when Johnny Servantez spotted a man named Johnny Rhoades begging on the street in Indianapolis, he couldn’t turn away. Rhoades just looked too devastatingly gaunt.

Servantez, who normally never gives to panhandlers, gave away some money, then took a picture of Rhoades and put it on Facebook. He shared Rhoades’s location and encouraged others to stop by and give the homeless man some help.

That photo went viral, capturing the attention of someone no one expected: Rhoades’s brother Danny, who hadn’t seen his brother in over seven years since their mother died.

Danny tried to go to his brother, but Johnny Rhoades had moved on. And once again, Danny lost contact with his brother.

But another person, Amy Renae Smith, set up a Facebook page trying to locate Johnny Rhoades and get him help. People posted tips and sightings, finally found Johnny — and then reunited him with Danny.

Amy shared, “He had two meals, a [hot] shower, a pair of clean clothes, a room to himself with quiet, a king size bed, tv w/ cable, fridge, a microwave, Pepsi, & leftovers. He is safe, and resting.”
