A man’s whole life — complete with love, joy, sorrow and grief — is compressed into six minutes, in this intimate epic of the human journey.

Beginning with birth, the unnamed main character goes through many life experiences — first memories, childhood parties, sex, drugs, raves — learning from some and unable to come to terms with others.

The film speeds through the pivotal events and images of a life, until the key moment when he meets the love of his life.

Time slows down — but then a new chapter begins, speeding through new milestones like marriage, birth… and then harrowing tragedy.

Director Joschka Laukeninks shot for 17 days over the course of 1.5 years, using 8 actors to play the main character from youth to old age.

This visually striking short drama shows the main character only from behind. But despite the lack of a human face, the film generates enormous feeling and empathy through its quicksilver editing and concise, poetic voiceover. What could be a montage becomes a small-scale epic, thanks to its visual and narrative ambition.

Backstory may be short, but it distills the enormity of time and the joys and tragedies of existence into its few minutes — and the result is a profound examination of what it means to be alive.
