High Hoops by Tanner Jarman

A teen girl fights for a starting spot on the basketball team. But then, tragedy strikes.

A young teen basketball player named Brianna aspires to make it to the WNBA. For her, sports are a way out of her hard-scrabble life, as well as her ticket to helping her family.

But when she’s injured, she loses her starting spot on the team — and then must fight her way past a new rival to get it back.

This short drama features a deft, strong narrative arc than any fan of the sports film genre will recognize.

But this comeback story is anchored by strong performances all around. Joya McFarland gives a strong, gritty performance with emotional weight, and as Shannon, Christine Catechis brings nuance and honesty to a traditional antagonist role.

Filled with exciting sports sequences, quick pacing and a great score, “High Hoops” balances a propulsive story with emotional acuity — and will keep viewers engrossed until the very last point.
