Don't Keep Your Love a Secret

By Jason Headley | Comedy
A couple just wants to get that spark back in their relationship.

A couple attend therapy together in the hopes of reigniting the spark that has gone out of their relationship. But the problem may be more about their circumstances than about their essential compatibility.

Writer-director Jason Headley's short comedy is essentially an extended scene of a couples' therapy session, in which two people confront the issues plaguing their relationship, speak to each other honestly and come back together on the same page.

But Headley's riff on the situation is both clever and perceptive, offering a fresh and unexpected twist that adds a hilarious, slightly darker and complicated take on the relationship comedy. The surprise upends a fundamental premise on the genre, opening up a whole new avenue of opportunity for laughs.

The short is buoyed by terrific performances by Dana Blasingame and Matt Jones, who audiences may recognize from shows like "Breaking Bad." They play off each other with impeccable comic timing, using the sharp, witty dialogue to explore the tensions, misunderstandings and grievances that can accumulate in any relationship. They banter and bicker as their bewildered, bemused therapist watches, proving that no romantic relationship, no matter its original origins of passion, is immune from the doldrums of discontent.

Combined with self-assured direction and editing, "Don't Keep Your Love a Secret" is a smart, ironic take on the romantic comedy that percolates along, engaging audiences with its smarts and playfulness. By the film's end, audiences will appreciate its flip on the typical script of the genre, as well as its insights into the foibles of modern romance.
