Junction

By Nathan Jurevicius | Animation
The 'Face Changers' embark on a journey up a mountain to unleash the winds of change.

The Face Changers make clay tokens that change the winds and therefore faces of their family and kin. They’ve done this for generations.

But then the youngest of the Face Changers embarks on a huge task: to take 10,000 steps to the top of a mountain and unleash winds of change.

The scion of this Face Changers family makes their way through a surreal landscape, meeting characters and encountering sights while growing towards wisdom in the process.

Writer/director/art director Nathan Jurevicius has created a marvelously imaginative short fantasy animation inspired by the parental warning: “If the wind changes, your face will stick like that.”

Based on his own children’s graphic novel of the same name — which was published by Koyama Press — the film is rendered with richly complex, almost psychedelic images that draws upon both Judeo-Christian storytelling and Australian Aboriginal tribal myths. Jurevicius worked with OKTA Studio to bring the images to life, and paired the story with an evocative score by Luke Jurevicius.

Children’s stories have a powerful clarity of story and theme that, at its best, compresses complex ideas and feelings into its most economical yet effective strokes.

“Junction” — made with the assistance of the Lithuanian Film Centre — retains this clarity, managing to create an entire whole world of color and expression, while still telling a universal story. Memorable and full of enchantment, the film is a visual treat and heartwarming story.
